In the wake of the racial injustice that's been going on in our country, learning and staying aware and doing my best to be an ally (even though sometimes I feel like I am far from the best ally, but we try every day), I was trying to think about something I could post that is meaningful and something that I intake daily that I can change to be more diverse, if that makes sense. Something that I had thought about recently and have decided to do was actively listen to and find new music by black artists! I really don't listen to many black artists, and music is something that is so important to me and so many others that I figured this is also another thing we can do diversify our media and lift up black voices (like literally). So, I'm linking my new Spotify playlist, "black voices" and listing a few of my favorite/new favorite black artists! Hope you guys enjoy :)
(Also you know what we need more of? We need more black indie artists! Let me know if you guys know of any and I'll add them to the playlist!)
KHALID: I saw Khalid a few years ago with some of my best friends (we went to see the opener), but we stayed for Khalid and I've been listening ever since! My brother loves Khalid, even my dad loves Khalid, and I will say there is some loyalty there because he's from Texas - you know how it is. He honestly has some really great hits, and he just put out a new single with Victoria Monet and it is amazing! I always know that when I don't know what I'm in the mood to listen to, I can put on Khalid and be satisfied or if my brother or friends are in the car, I know Khalid is a go-to.
H.E.R.: I think out of some of the new black artists I've been listening to and looking it up, I think H.E.R. is one of my new favorites! Her voice is so beautiful and so calming - so her music is just super easygoing and chill. She is a very young artist (only two years older than me) and has won a Grammy for Best R&B album! And after just doing some research, when she was younger she was on a music competition sponsored by Radio Disney, and I literally remember her being on it and really liking her. It's so cool to see how amazing she has grown up to be! I guess I knew even ten years ago that I would like her, and I can't wait to keep listening to her.
CHLOE + HALLE: Chloe + Halle have been on my radar for awhile now and lucky for us, they just dropped a new album, Ungodly Hour! Something I think they are known for (and if not, they should be known for) is their incredible harmonies. They are simply on point in every song or cover that they do, and their voices are fit so well together (I mean, obviously!). I am also really excited to see Halle as Ariel in the upcoming retelling of The Little Mermaid, her vocals are just simply stunning! They recently performed an amazing duo of their songs from their new album on the BET Awards, definitely worth checking out!
LEON BRIDGES:I felt like I literally had to listen to Leon Bridges, because he is from Fort Worth, Texas and I've got to support my fellow Fort Worth Texan! I also had a strong feeling I would like him because a lot of artists I listen to like Maggie Rogers are friends with him and support him, and it was an absolutely right feeling! His music has such an old-school feel to it, like he jumped right out of the 1950s and 60s and I literally love it! He is one of my favs also that I am looking forward to listening to more.
